You’ve probably used Google to search for stuff on the Web, but that unassuming Search box is a lot more powerful than it looks.
By typing instructions in a specific format, you can get Google to do everything from performing mathematical calculations to delivering statistics for you favorite sports teams.
Try the following tricks:
- Calculate: Type a calculation in the Search box and press Enter. For example, if you want to average three numbers, you might type (8 + 9 + 10)/3= and press Enter.
- Convert units of measure: For example, type 10 kilometers in miles or 3 gallons in liters and press Enter.
- Convert currencies: Wondering how far $200 will get you in Europe? Type 200 USD in euros and press Enter.
- Get stock quote: Type the ticker symbol for the stock and press Enter; for example, type msft and press Enter to get a stock quote for Microsoft.
- Check the weather: Type weather followed by the name of the nearest city (or large town) and press Enter.
- Check the time: Wondering what time it is in Beijing? Type time Beijing and press Enter.
- Check sports scores and schedules: For example, type St. Louis Rams and press Enter to check the score of the latest game and dates and times of upcoming Rams games. (Works for the English Premier League, National Football League, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball.)
- Check movie times: Type movies followed by your ZIP code and press Enter to check on movie times at the local theaters.
- Check flight status: Type the airline name followed by the flight number (for example, southwest airlines 918) and press Enter.
- Track a package (UPS, USPS, and FedEx): Type your tracking number and press Enter.
