Unlike other users here I’ve been using Act Restoring Mouthwash which also contains cetylpyridinium chloride. For the past year or so I’ve been getting brown stains on my teeth which has been getting worse and worse! I was just at the dentist two months ago (they are able to remove the stains) but they are already terribly stained again! After wracking my brain trying to think of what I have been eating to stain my teeth I determined it must be the Act Mouthwash (which my dentist kept recommending to me!).

I just wrote to Crest. I brush at least twice a day with whitening toothpaste, but my teeth are getting yellower. I don’t smoke. I realized it was the Crest Prohealth. It gives me a major flem/mucus reaction and gives me an upset stomach and soar throat. I’ve switched to Act Restoring.

My dentist had me receive a gross (full mouth) debridement with much success. She had a teenage patient that had serious stains from the Crest Pro Health mouthwash, so she understood the likely cause. When she reported that problem to Crest they refused to cooperate in testing the product and telling customers about risk. So she told them she would no longer recommend Crest to her patients.

The Navy exchange the sold me my mouthwash asked for the product number and said they would stop selling it or other blue colored rinses from same supplier.

Sounds like product companies don’t want to hear or tell about the problem.

I just experienced massive browning of teeth at bottom gum line and at fillings of upper front teeth. The product was a military exchange stoore product called Exchange Select Iceberg Blue Tartar Control Antiseptic Mouth Rinse.
Ingredients: Eucalyptol, Menthol, Methyl salicylate, Thymol. There were no warings about staining.

I wonder if the testing agencies monitor these products for long time side effects?

All of the above but my letter from Crest when I reported the problem said that I was “unusual.” This was when Crest Pro Health was new to the market. They did, however, refund $5 product cost.

Hard work by the hygeinist (who recommended the product in the first place) removed most staining but years later the stain on restoration on a front tooth remains.

Have just moved and the new hygeinist recommended Crest Pro Health. Told her what I thought of the product and that I will never buy anything made by this company again. She had never heard of this problem. When I questioned her further about her other patients, she agreed that it was happening.

WOW. After getting chastised at the dentist for having stained teeth (she said from coffee and tea, which i have been doing for YEARS with no stains)… this makes sense. I have been using the Crest Pro Health products for about a year now, just around the time the staining started.

I am switching today. never again. I hope they can get these stains off at my next cleaning.

i used crest pro health for one week-end, woke up w/ my gums peeling off, (white and mucusy) and hurting…. looked it up, as my mouth is extremely healthy, and found this sight!!! i’m sooo glad i found it when i did and i am throwing my full bottle in the trash immediately!!!!

I have been a coffee and Coke drinker for over thirty years. Started to use Crest Pro-Health mouthwash last month, and started to notice the brown stains on my teeth! It is getting worse, and after reading this page, everything came to focus on the cause of this problem!

Amazing revelations! I used Crest toothpaste for several years, and also experienced the white stringy film I had to wipe from my mouth every morning. One day my daughter visited and brought her Mentadent with her. I tried it, and the effect was immediate! Occasionally, if i use my husband’s Crest (he does not experience this side effect), I get the strings immediately. Now I make sure I don’t run out. It’s weird, but at least I figured it out.

I have been using Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and rinse for years now. All I get are amazing clean teeth and good breath that lasts for hours. Oh, and I get a great check-up when I go to the dentist.
I have serious gingivitis tendencies and I am so happy to have found this great product that does not sting my mouth to death.
I heartily recommend this product to anyone who is serious about their dental health. Oh, and I have porcelain fillings, a dental implant and some caps. This product does not stain anything in my mouth. I brush twice per day and floss daily and see my dental hygienist 3x per year.
