Services/Rates

I’m a hired pen. For about $50 an hour (occasionally less if I happen to really like you or I’m not involved in something infinitely more interesting), I can help you with your writing and editing needs. I currently offer the following services:

• Team writing: Team writing or co-authoring is my specialty. If you have a book in mind, I can work with you to develop a detailed table of contents, write a proposal to pitch to publishers, and craft a top-notch manuscript. Your job is to provide me with relevant and compelling content. I take it from there. I currently work exclusively on how-to books (as opposed to novels, screenplays, and that sort of thing). I also require written content from you. Feel free to dictate and record, but you’ll have to pay a transcription service to provide me with what I need.
• Ghostwriting: If you want to take all the credit for the books we write, that’s fine with me, as long as I keep more of the money.
• Book doctoring: Manuscript in shambles? I provide CPR for ailing manuscripts, as well as for frustrated authors and editors.
• Technical writing: Need documentation? I’m your man. I have written more than 50 books on computer- and software-related topics.
• Copy writing: I work closely with clients to develop quality marketing copy, Web copy, newsletters, articles, and other written content that meets their needs.
• Website design/blogging: I’m no Web programmer, but if you need a basic Website or blog, I can set one up for you and quickly bring you up to speed on the basics of posting content and configuring your site. I can even help you develop content for your site. If you need more than a basic website or blog, I can refer you to someone who can provide those services.
• Development editing: When you’re struggling with the big-picture elements of your manuscript – structure, organization, tone, content, and flow – I can get you on track by providing valuable insights and recommendations.
• Copy editing: When your copy needs a mechanic, call on me for a tune-up. I can tighten your language and punch up your prose to make it more engaging for readers.
• Coaching/consulting: Although I prefer to play a more active role in cooking up a manuscript, I can step out of the kitchen and let you do your thing. I can provide feedback on your table of contents or review a chapter or two and provide marked-up copy with suggestions on how to improve your writing.

How I get paid: If I co-author, team write, or ghostwrite a book with you for a publisher, I receive 50% or more of the advance and royalties, which the publisher pays directly to me. If I work directly for you in some other capacity, I require 50% payment up front, another 25% when the project is 1/2 complete, and the final 25% upon completion.

I will also consider working on retainer or accepting an incredible job offer to work with you or your company exclusively on a full-time basis.
