A couple years ago, ABN AMRO Mortgage Group, Inc. sent me a letter indicating that it had lost a tape containing sensitive information about its customers. To make up for it, they gave me a free 90-day subscription to TrueCredit, a credit monitoring system that notifies you in the event that anything changes on your credit report. If someone tries to take out a loan or sign up for a credit card using your name, TrueCredit notifies you via email.
I used the service for 90 days. If I remember correctly, ABN AMRO extended the free subscription for an entire year. I loved the service. Eventually my free subscription expired, and I chose not to pay for it. I figured I’d just download a free credit report once a year.
TrueCredit kept emailing me with special offers, and one day I decided to sign up for a free 30-day trial. I never had any intention of continuing beyond the 30-days. I just wanted a free copy of my credit report.
Just before my 30 days were up, I logged in to TrueCredit and started looking for an option to cancel the account. There is no such option. You have to call. I called and told the person who answered that I wanted to cancel my account. He asked why, so I told him that I just wanted the free report. I said I thought the service was excellent and offered many benefits, but I was unwilling to pay for it at this time. He then launched into a long series of benefits and recommended that I continue the service. I said, “No. I understand the benefits, and I still want to cancel the service.”
He continued, this time with scare tactics. If I discontinue the service, I will no longer have identity theft insurance, and if someone steals my identity, it could really cost me some money… blah, blah, blah. I told him that I understood and I still wanted to cancel the service. I had to repeat my desire to cancel the service no fewer than five times.
This is one of my pet peeves. If I can sign up for a service online, I think I should be able to opt out online, too. And if I call to cancel, I shouldn’t have to tell the person five to ten times that I want to cancel. Once, maybe twice, should be enough.
The gentleman I talked with told me he would cancel my account. He gave me a confirmation number and sent me an email message confirming the cancellation. It ended well, but what a hassle. This will make me think twice about ever signing up for these free services, even with legitimate companies.

Joe,
I am trying to cancel my truecredit 30day free subscription as well. I found two numbers to call, both seem to lead to the same system
1-800-493-2392
1-888-749-0731
After I gave the CSR my SSN and verify my first and last name. She tells me I have to fax them a copy of my driver license for security purposes in order to cancel. She then proceed to give me a fax number and a reference number.
I have searched the internet for all the posts on problems cancelling the truecredit subscription, and none of the people who successsfully cancelled it ever had to fax anything. I am not sure if I should just fax it or not, but I am sure as hell never gonna sign up for free credit monitoring again
so i’m in 30-day free trial now.
but seems the report cant be sent.
anyway i want to terminate the serivce.
i tried both #. 888-749-0731 / 800-493-2392
and opt for option 2, which is for stop service,
but seems i need to wait forever until someone can answer my call.
so how to cancel that?
In order to cancel the account with true credit you have to change your credit card number to 0000000000000000. Merry Christmas! I was told by an amazing mortgage broker that annualcreditreport.com is the only website anyone should use.
Thank you for the info. Wish I’d seen it back in August. I though I was spending $12.95 for a one-time credit report. I looked all over the website for an hour, trying to find the “cancel anytime” link. I’ve been told that I’m paid until the end of October now, and I’ll recieve a cancellation notice at that time. I may just cancel the credit card its billed to, b/c I don’t trust these people anymore.
I just went through the same hassle. I searched all over their website and found no links to cancel, no FAQs with instructions, and not even a customer service phone number. I had to find a number via a search in an unrelated message board. I got the same blather from the customer service rep, stopped her short, and lit into her about the cancellation process.
I also wrote a scathing survey response to the effect that, while they are supposed to be protecting consumers, they are fleecing them with their cancellation scam.
I have been going through the same thing for the last two months trying to cancel. No number or link for cancelation. Thanks for the information about the credit card number it was a great help. I only needed for the 30 day trial but low and behold no way to cancel. How easy was that for them to take $14.95 a month from me and not give me a way to cancel.
I had the same issue, they actually have a “D”rating with the better business bureau.

I just cancelled a TrueCredit monitoring subscription using these instructions. Here is the process:
*Call 800-493-2392.
*Option 2: Cancel monitoring service.
*You will be placed on hold. I called at 11:30 Pacific time on a Wednesday. My hold time was under 2 minutes.
*Verify your SSN and Name with the CSR.
*Tell them you want to cancel. They will ask why. BS them with something.
*Their retention script has 3 parts to it, they will try to keep you on with something.
*Each time they speak, repeat “No. Cancel the account, please.”
*Eventually, the CSR will ask you to confirm the email address on the TrueCredit account. You will then get a confirmation number. Mine was 4 digits.
Total time; 6 minutes. Hopefully this goes as smoothly for other people. Thanks!

I just cancelled my membership. When you call to cancel, listen to the customer service agent VERY, VERY carefully …… you think they are agreeing to your cancellation request…..
After searching their website for quite some time, I FINALLY found a phone number to call to cancel my membership. When I called to cancel, their rep said they would not bill me for the following month. I told them I wanted to cancel my membership entirely. The agent was very difficult to understand (strong accent) and she repeated she would not bill me for March. I again emphasized I did not want to ever be charged, that I was cancelling the membership ENTIRELY. FINALLY, after going through this about 3 or 4 more times, she asked for my email and gave me a cancellation number. She said she would send an email confirming the cancellation.
I have no doubt that had I been in a rush while on the phone with this company, I would have been satisfied with their agreement to not charge me for the following month……and they would have charged me thereafter.
Also, when I signed up for the free trial membership, I was told I would receive an email, reminding me that my free membership trial period was about to expire in 1 week and that my credit card was going to be charged. I could then easily & conveniently cancel my membership. I marked my calendar….guess what? No email. No notification whatsoever. (I did check my “junk” email, too)
I feel truecredit.com runs the organization in an unethical way – I wish they didn’t have my ssn # and other personal information as I don’t trust them!
This is ridiculous. These guys really have poor business practices. Anyone who does “recurring billing” is usually sketchy. Let’s be serious, the only companies that should be doing recurring billing is cell phone companies, cable bills but a credit report site?
Every time I try to call to cancel there office is closed and the instructions say to visit the appropriate web site to find the hours. There is no web site with their hours. This service is the biggest ripoff. While my credit report is relatively accurate, the FICO scores – including the Trans Union score are 40+ points BELOW my actual score. I just bought a car today and they pulled my Trans Union report – FICO 729, which qualified me for special financing rates…the same score from the TrueCredit site was 689, which would have meant higher interest rates. Believe me, there were NO changes to my credit in the last month so this is obviously a scam – keep reporting lower scores so you keep the service as you try to figure out how to improve it. DO NOT ORDER THIS SERVICE – PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I can’t cancel either….guess I’ll go through the hassel tommorrow =(
Thanks Terry, I just followed your instructions and was able to cancel in less than 6 minutes. Finally.
Thank you Terry. I also followed your instructions to the letter after looking for more than an hour for a phone number on the TrueCredit website. It was over in less than 3 minutes. TrueCredit helped me with a credit fraud situation where PrivacyGuard was absolutely useless, but I just couldn’t afford the $14.95 every month any longer. Thanks for your help!
What a pain. I just called 800-493-2392 to cancel my service. It took me at least 7 times tell them to just cancel the service.
Yeah, I called to cancel and went through almost the EXACT SAME scenario Catherine outlined above — the rep tried to connive me, I kept saying “please cancel,” the rep tried offering the extra free 30 days, I specifically and emphatically declined, she then asked for my email so they could verify and send me a cancellation confirmation.
Then, guess what? I get an email informing me that — lucky me! — I am getting a “free” 30 day membership. Unbelievable. The “upshot” being, of course, that if and when I “forget” to re-cancel (as they no doubt hope and intend), they can then bill me even after I already canceled. One cancellation is enough; nobody should have to go through this song-and-dance.
So now I guess it’s back to square one. It’s a sad, sad, sad testimonial to how the lobbyists must be embedded in the political and judicial system, that a company is able to operate in such a blatantly dishonest and shoddy manner. Where are the state Attorneys General on this?? I mean, c’mon.

There is still no online cancellation feature.. Still sucks!!!
I just cancelled my service.. Total time 2 min. The CSR asked me for my social and first and Last name, the minute I called. Wait time was less than a minute.
They will try to coerce you a 30 day free trial.. Keep saying no clearly..
I got my 4 digit cancellation confirmation over the phone. Will check my email to see if it has come in
It took me 5 min its funny how they try to offer anything to you not to cancel.
I just called a while back and was well equiped with the knowledge i gather from this thread. I learned to say “No” for every question. And as mentioned in this thread they offered to extend my membership for one more month. I told “No”. and they gave me a confirmation number. It was quick and total time 3 min. No questions on faxing the driver licenses.
I signed up for free just to get credit for an offer. When I called to cancel I told the rep I have terminal cancer and I was getting information on all my debt so that I could take care of things so my family wouldn’t have to and that I was using their service because it was free and I have no money and no income.
He offered me an extension on my membership and I told him that I am not expected to live that long and that this is the only time I would need the service and I don’t want to spend what little time I have left trying to cancel this service and started to fake cry at this point.
He gave me a confirmation number.
I think I talked to him for about 80 seconds.
Just canceled by phone, took about 45 seconds. No offers for more free service and a really nice lady without a deep accent.
just cancelled in under 2 minutes…
800-493-2392
option 2…just like Terry’s instruction stated.
Less than a minute…7:28AM Pacific time was when I called.
But overall this thread did prepare me for the worst case scenario.
Thanks guys.
I just canceled too using the info Terry provided – less than 2 minutes total to do so & no hold time. They asked to verify my SSN, first & last name, email on the acct & birth date.
They told me about a new benefit, I said I wasn’t interested, no arguments & no offer of 30 free days.
Obviously reading a script, but otherwise very friendly.
I was looking to cancel the acct online and when couldnt find anything i found this post! its 1009pm in Puerto Rico right now so i was pretty sure no one was going to pick up the phone if i called. But still i decided to do it just because. After less than 30 secs waiting (after going for option 2) some lady answers and ask for my ssn then i told her i wanted to cancel the acct. she went right to the scare tactics asking if i had some backup plan or service to monitor my credit. i told that i already knew what she was gonna say since i had this service like a year ago and i just wanted to cancel it w/o hassle. she sounded pretty pissed but asked for my email and said she was gonna send some confirmation email about canceling and gave a 4 dgt number.
Thas was it! exactly less than 3 mins.
Just canceled mine in 3 minutes and 4 seconds.
Cancelled in 3 minutes flat! Just be persistent, don’t let ‘em hook you, and tell them you want to cancel your account.
Customer service phone number is (800) 493-2392.
was easy to cancle my account. i called, they pitched, i denied, and they thanked me…..
I called and got a man talking extremely fast in an extremely thick accent, and it seemed like I’d be able to add on here that my total call ran smoothly and was done in 3 minutes, except for the fact that he gave me a confirmation number and I never received the email. I called a day before my 30 days was up, which was yesterday. If they charge me first thing tomorrow morning, I swear. I have my confirmation number, like I said, so I better be able to work it out. How frustrating. It’s like “Why do you want to cancel?” “Well, to be honest, I’m living paycheck to paycheck like everyone else, knew my credit score must be in the bucket, so I figured I might as well confirm it. And yep, sure enough, it’s ‘poor’, so you answered my question! Thanks!” lol. But instead I just waited for him to finish what I could understand of his speech and said I want it cancelled. So lets hope tomorrow goes well.
i can’t even talk to anyone, i keep getting disconnected
I ve been trying to call the numbers you guys posted above. well, i called 3 times and every time a cust ser rep picks up….tells me that they are having a system malfunction and to call back in an hour then hangs up. everytime its been someone different and they dont even give you a chance to say anything. even if you try to stop them, they just hang up after telling you to call later. based on all the responses above, i dont know if to believe them or if this is just another tactic hoping that the customer will be too busy in an hour and forget to call.
Once you get past the “guilt” they put on you by offering 3 or 4 different options, they cancel the order.
Called the numbers, gave the info, and still haven’t received an email nor did they cancel it. UGH
I agree with Daniel a few comments up. By reading some of these comments before hand I was thinking it would take forever and I would have to listen to all these offers. That was not the case. I just said I wanted to cancel and she gave me the confirmation number. I just hope that I get the e-mail confirming this and that they don’t charge me.
Thanks, Terry. Within 3 minutes it was canceled – a lot less time than I spent on their website looking for an option!
I followed Terry’s advice, and I was done in about five minutes. I have had plenty of experience with pushy cancellation people. My only advice is that you be firm with them. Let them know up front that you are calling for one and only one reason, and cut them off every time they start one of their advertisements. If they are extra pushy, just tell them that you read all about their tactics on this site, and that you are aware of what a poor rating they receive for customer service. If that still doesn’t work, ask to speak to a manager. If the manager gives you the same routine, then it’s time to turn to the Dark Side…
I also followed Terry’s advice and it went fairly smooth. He asked for all of my info and asked what i wanted to do. i said i wanted to cancel the account he said no problem then he read off one of his promos about a free messenger thing or whatever on the page, i didnt reply and that was it, lol…he then read off my 4 digit cancellation code and im hoping that was all. I emailed my credit card company notifying them of what is going on, so im curious to see if they could block the transaction if they didnt cancel my account like i said i wanted too. ef you truecredit!!!
Let it be known, last year in April I signed up for truecredit. I ordered the “free” 30 day trial.
I called them and cancelled my order , before the grace period on the trial. and it took around 15 minutes on the phone to cancel. They gave me a confirmation number and said they would email me it. They also said they would not bill me.
Well my account was never cancelled. But I was billed the 29.95, so I did call Mastercard and disputed the charge. They agreed that the charges should be disputed.
Then about one week later – I had fraudulent use of my card! Actually, had 16 charges on my card totalling $250. all stemming from the theives giving my card information to others OR using it themselves. I had to get a new Mastercard because of those lowlifes.
Bottom line – STAY AWAY FROM THESE STIFFS.
I too looked everywhere for a way to cancel my subscription. I found the 800-493-2392 number on here and called it. Hit option 2 and was not on hold at all. You do have to REPEATEDLY interrupt their speech about why you shouldn\’t cancel and almost get rude but she finally cancelled it. It took 4-5 times of saying to cancel it before she gave up and cancelled it. Make sure you get a reference number from them over the phone as well as an email conformation but it took less than 4 minutes total!
Here’s how to cancel it:

Just called and cancelled. I’m so glad I read this page before calling. They kept flooding me with questions. My response was “I just want to cancel my account” After you say that about 8 times, they give up =)
i just called and cancelled in about 2 minutes. i just said that i couldnt afford it and they didnt ask me any bs questions.
they’ve got a new trick – if you call to cancel they’ll (semirandomly) tell you their systems are down, and call back in three hours.
i called back immediately and somehow (gosh!) their systems were back online.
I have been calling 800-493-2392 all day to cancel and everytime I select option 2 the automated voice begins to talk but then I get a dial tone. Each and everytime!!!!!! I’ve tried immediatly selecting 2, then i’ll get the dial tone a bit later but it never fails, I still get it. Somebody, anybody, HELP!!!!!!!!!
I dailed the 888 749 0731 number and got through. They tried to sell me on staying and I told them I don’t have to give them a reason and cancel my account now. I gave them my info and 1 mintue later my account was cancelled. NEVER SIGN UP WITH THIS COMPANY!!!
